Into the Woods …

Today I move desks and tomorrow I move jobs.  I’ll still be at NI (the calculator company), I’m just moving to the International Marketing Communications team.  In my new role, I will be serving as the marketing support for (take a deep breath – it’s a mouthful): India, Russia, the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey.  I’ll also serve as PR support for Asia and Australia.

I have many emotions … Excitement to work with the part of the world where so many religions originated. After being fascinated with the area’s past - now I get to learn about the region’s contemporary business culture … Fear because I really don’t have any idea what is going on.  I’ve been doing domestic PR ever since I graduated.  Web marketing? Sales? Eh?  … Curiosity about how what I learn will change me … Humility over how lucky I am to have such an opportunity … Enthusiasm to learn, learn, learn …

The best parts about this move are that a) I still get to work with my friends and work wife on the domestic PR team and b) I get to work more with my good friend Nathan.

Here’s to the future!

Bonnie and Clyde!

This morning, I was telling Ryan about the dream I had last night when I heard scraping in the living room.  Of course, Martin had knocked something off the table that Hollis was chewing on.  Before we had the baby animals, life was so simple!  Mercedes minded her own business.  Now, anything a cat can move falls (literally) prey to Hollis’ chewing madness.

They work in together.  Partners in crime.  Martin paws something off the table to the floor at Hollis’ feet, never to be whole again.  Martin will even grab things out from under refrigerator magnets with his mouth.  In that instance, both the wedding invitation/to-do list that was posted AND the refrigerator magnet are lost to the vicious jaws of our border collie.

If you put something out of the dog’s reach, you think it’s safe … but in our house, it’s not.  And Hollis gets in so much trouble when he eats stuff.  Come to think of it … Martin probably laughs.

I think the hardest thing is when they destroy your bills and or store lists.  Store lists can be a product of a week of research.  Gone!

Look at this picture.  Martin looks around for what he can give to Hollis.  Shameful.

Maybe I should just pick up things in my house more?  That’s a thought!

Back from Conference!

Had a great weekend attending the United Methodist General Conference and visiting college roommates Ginny and Becky.  Ginny and I got our nails done (to show off her ring of course!).  My nails are never done, so I feel very “Dallas” today at work.  All dolled up!

We had breakfast with Becky at Dallas-local favorite Breadwinners.  It is always fun to catch up with old friends. Ginny and I celebrated her engagement over sushi on Friday – thanks James!

Conference was amazing.  I am proud to be a part of a group so dedicated to human rights and social change around the world.  I witnessed the best sermon I have ever seen.  Tara walked me through the work of the legislative subcommittees.  I met clergy people from all over the U.S. and listened to their stories.

This annual conference marked the 40th year (to the date!) that Methodists in the U.S. became the United Methodists, truly including people of all races.  It is painful to think that there was a time that we didn’t include people of all races into one church – but I am glad we are recognizing that pain and remembering it so that we can continue today to become more and more inclusive.

Continue prayers for Tara as she serves as an elected delegate until Friday.

Hey, Ft. Worth! Tara’s on her way …

Today, my good friend Tara embarks on a journey.  Tara was elected to represent our part of Texas in the United Methodist General Conference!  Tara will spend the next two weeks voting on Methodist policies and amendments.  After she was elected last year, she started getting all sorts of materials ranging from videos on “how to conduct parliamentary procedure” and “suggested snacks to keep you healthy and happy during 10 straight days of voting” to literature from special-interest groups asking for Tara’s vote in their favor.  She has prepared and prepared and prepared and is ready to represent!  512 in the methodist hizze!!!

The world-wide conference is in Ft. Worth this year, so I am going to drive up there Friday to watch Tara vote (and of course to celebrate Ginny’s engagement as well!).  Tara is ready to help change church policies “which don’t fully enable [the United Methodist Church's] ability to follow our mission statement to ‘make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world’” (What a beautiful quote – you are a politician, Tara!).

I’ll be there in person this weekend and in spirit and prayer the rest of the two long weeks you are living in north Texas!  God bless you, Tara!

Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day!  I remember that Earth Day was a very special celebration to my mom when I was a kid.  She would make me a lunch and draw trees on the napkins to remind me to love my earth.  Earth Day reminds me of hippy Harriet.

Ryan and I celebrated earth day with a moonlight kayak trip on Town Lake this weekend.  It was a lot of fun.

Today, in honor of Mother Earth, pick up a piece of trash or walk to lunch or do something else, no matter how small, in honor of this great planet!

Virginia Lee Taylor!

Many years ago, when I was a single lady in college, my friend Bonnie set me up on a date her friend, James.  He lived an hour-and-a-half away in this strange city called “Austin.”  We talked on the phone a few times before we met.  When we talked on the phone, I’d let all my roommates, Becky, Ginny and Katie, talk to him too.  Ginny would giggle at his jokes (that’s important later on in this story).

James and I eventually met and barely dated.  After a few months, I hadn’t heard from James at all.  I had been dating Ryan for almost a year, and I had no idea what James was up to.  It was one fateful summer night when I got the update from Katie:

“Hil, Gin wants me to tell you something.  She is afraid you will be mad … so she said it would be OK if I broke the news to you.”

“Oh my goodness – what is it?”

“Ginny and James have been dating for like six months and they really like each other and Ginny thinks you might be mad.”

(I broke into hysterical laughter because I wasn’t mad.  The previous six months flew into my mind – “OH MY GOODNESS I AM STUPID,” I thought.  Ginny would visit Austin every once in a while.  I never questioned why Ginny was making these trips.  It all made sense!)

Today, they have dated for seven years, visited Asia extensively together and have been BFFs through it all.

Why am I telling you this story?  Why am I drudging this up?  Because Saturday, April 19, 2008, Ginny and James were visiting her friend, Karen in The Woodlands.  At Karen’s paper goods shop, James and Ginny decided to look through some sample wedding invitations when …. lo and behold … Ginny and James’ wedding invitation was an example.  In Ginny’s favorite colors.  James proposed!

That is so creative – good work James!

Congratulations!  You two are great friends and I wish you a  blessed and happy life together.  It makes me smile when I think about how excited you must be!  See you Friday, Gin!

Work Cafeteria Series – #1 Best Dish!

Taco Bowl Day is like a holiday around here.  Meeting invites are sent out so that you can ensure your loved ones won’t forget that it’s Taco Bowl Day.  Friends don’t let friends miss out on Taco Bowl.

The best part about the Taco Bowl is the shell.  I know, I know, all taco salads have shells.  But the one made in the work cafe must be fried for about 10-15 minutes longer than “the standard” because it’s very, very flavorful.    You really can’t finish it, but the little bits you can eat really compliment all the lettuce and tomatoes and cheese and rice and beans and beef.

A couple Taco Bowl Fridays ago, Leanne and I saw the guy in charge of the cafeteria.  We told him how much we loved Taco Bowl and how Taco Bowl Fridays in Mopac B were our favorite days.  He told us that the Taco Bowl would be a menu item in building C the following Monday.  Leanne’s response? “You don’t think we already know that?”

Taco Bowl is very very special.

P.S. OMG – Jim is my hero.

Work Cafeteria Series – #2 MARIA: THE SANDWICH-MAKING PHENOMENON!

Maria!  Maria!  Maria! (cue the West Side Story soundtrack)

You know how sometimes you will buy a sandwich and the meat is off-center from the bread and you get annoyed when you pick it up because you have “greasy meat and mustard right hand” and too “much bread left hand?”  Or when you get a Chic-fil-a sandwich and the two sacred pickles are stacked on top of each other so you can’t spread the flavor?  Folks, worry no more.

Maria makes the sandwiches in the building B cafe.  You have never met a sandwich artist like Maria.  People come from buildings around to have her sandwiches.  It is a regular occurrence for a group of NI employees with nothing else in common to talk about  their deep love for Maria’s sandwiches.  Maria – regardless of the length of the sandwich line - looks at life one sandwich at a time.  She will not risk quality to gain efficency.  When two people are making sandwiches, cafe customers will often tell the other sandwich artist ”I’ll pass” and get in the second line to wait for Maria.   I would like to share a recent experience with you.

Sandwich: Turkey with Lettuce, Tomato and Avocado

Estimated sandwich-creation time: 1 minute

Actual sandwich-creation time: 4.5 minutes

Summary of why this sandwich takes 4.5 minutes under Maria’s management: Maria will grab a piece of the requested bread.  Maria will then pile 4-5 pieces of meat on your sandwich – CAREFULLY.  She will then lay each piece of turkey on the first piece of bread, slowly, one at at time, then pause to make sure no meat is hanging off the side.  Then she will slice the avocado.  She will slice each piece really small and flat – perfect for a sandwich.  And if one piece isn’t flat anough, she will reslice it.  Then, she will slice any brown part off of the avocado.  Then she will look through all the tomatoes, pick the best ones, and place two tomato slices perfectly parallel on your bread - moving them if they are not perfect the first try.  Next she will carefully scrunch her eyes and salt your tomatoes – one careful shake at a time – and then she will follow with the pepper.  She will place another piece of bread atop her open-face masterpiece, look up thoughtfully and say, “Would you like it toatsted?”

Maria’s sandwiches are delicious and perfectly balanced – every bite is a perfect combination of the sandwich’s flavor plus the addition of a lot of love.

Work Cafeteria Series – #3 Mango Salsa!

To begin the “work cafeteria series,” I will first bestow the award for the “top topping” to … the high-quality mango salsa!  I eat a lot of mango salsa, and let me tell you – the NI café mango salsa is something to write blog about.  It’s only available during “Tuna Steak” and “Whole Wheat Spicy Grilled Chicken Quesadilla” menu weeks (of which we are blessed to be a part of right now).

Back in the day, Amanda and I would distract the cafeteria staff and reach into the forbidden “not self-serve” tray and scoop extra mango salsa for ourselves.   Being scolded is a deep, deep-seeded fear of mine, so my willingness to take a risk such as this proves that the tastiness of the mango salsa is worthy to be the #3 reason to eat in our cafeteria.

Stay tuned this week as we move into the “work cafeteria MVPs” and the winner of the ”Best-Overall” Dish.
