Zombies in Austin?

Blair forwarded this post from tech blog Gizmodo to me.  Construction signs in Austin were hacked!  Either that, or there are Zombies on Lamar Blvd.

To do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly

Initially, I was attracted to my church by the hospitality shown when I walked through the open door, sat in the pew, and opened the newsletter.  Next, I was pulled in by the enthusiastic worship services provided by our ministers, music leaders and lay speakers.  Then, I learned more and more about my spirituality by participating in lessons through small groups, individual study, and Sunday School classes.  I feel blessed to receive these amazing gifts from my church home.  I am motivated every week.

What would God want me to do next?

It’s hard to argue that God wouldn’t want me to give back.  And not just give to my friends – but to give to all of God’s family.  That means everybody.  Jesus is our example.  He always gave to the outsiders and set up a perfect social structure with his selfless actions.  Bold mission and service takes us out of our comfort zone and away from the normalcy of our usual company.  But with the gifts of love, peace, comfort, grace, mercy and joy we receive from our creator, how could we not accept this challenge?  How could we not take our cup overflowing with blessings and share love with our neighbors asking for help?  How could we not take the risk?

I encourage you to consider taking part in one of the many mission and service opportunities listed on church bulletin boards, volunteer forums or the cork board at your favorite coffee shop.   President Barack Obama recently called for a day of service, but you can make any day ‘a day of service!’  No government designation necessary.

Learn about how much God blesses us … and be filled!  Then, join together and help fill others.

And what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? – Micah 6.8

It’s fun to blow up balloons

I had a surprisingly phallic girls night recently with some of my friends.  See, Courtney and I made balloon animals with Emilie’s balloon-animal-creation training kit and there are many male jokes to be made when drinking beer and blowing up balloon animals.  Many jokes.  The material is endless, people.

Turns out condom makers Durex had the same thought in mind with their recent ad campaign.

Here’s Deirdre’s dog, Bailey, being a perfect gentleman with Courtney and Emilie’s creations.

I haven’t purchased deodorant since 2003

It was a sunny day in Waco, Texas when I walked into the grocery store near campus.  It was May 2003.  I noticed a bargain bin advertising the deodorant I wore – Shower Clean Degree.

The sign over the bin read:

Shower Clean Degree
99 cents
No limit

99 cents?  No limit?  You bet I filled my basket!  I don’t remember how many Shower Clean Degrees I purchased, but I have not purchased deodorant since that day.  I’ve had a box full of Shower Clean Degrees that moved with me from my college apartment to Ryan and my first apartment to Ryan and my second apartment then to our house.  Now, I am on my very last one.

What technologies have changed in deodorant composition?  Is there still PH balance?  Are there still solids or is everything clear now?  I am over five years behind!

Does Shower Clean Degree still smell the same?  How much does deodorant cost?  Where is it in the store?  I feel like a caveman.

Happy National Pie Day!

Today is National Pie Day.  While some of you may be baking a pie to celebrate this, the most holiest of days, it’s about 80 degrees in Austin, so I am just going to post about pizza pie.

Time to play “Design Flaw” or “Pervert!”  Ryan and I ordered a pizza and the placement of the pizza-box image is unfortunate.

I don’t want to know everything included in the “Cowboys Unlimited Combo.”

Cute animals!

What time is it?  Cute animal time! Yay!

First up, here’s Ellie and Will’s cat, Willow.  Willow is a wild, feral cat … until it’s time to suck on the soft blanket.  I can just hear the purring …

And here’s my family, spooning.

That’s right, Martin is the big spoon.

Mr. Potato Colin

This is so cute.  Here is my friend, Colin, playing with Mr. Potato Head.  I’m glad his mom had a camera for this!

Peace and mutual upbuilding

A few months ago, our minister, David, gave a sermon on what we should  do when we get into the voting booth.  Looking to Romans 14:19, he asked us to “pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding.”  With that scripture in mind, I filled in the little squares of my vote-by-mail ballot.

No matter who you voted for or what you think will happen over the next four years – today makes history.

Yesterday we celebrated a man who had a dream for equality, and today, a large piece of that dream is realized in the leadership of the United States.  Today, a man with a father from Kenya and a mother from Kansas (brilliant sound bite, Obama PR people, brilliant!) is taking office.  Barack Hussein Obama is taking office.

My mother grew up fighting for equality during the civil rights movement.  I don’t understand today’s significance as much as she does, but I hope I don’t take it for granted.  I hope our children understand that there was a time when only white men were president and that on January 20, 2009 we broke that barrier.

This year, a woman (pictured yesterday on Hil Street) received 18 million votes in the Democratic presidential primary.  The Republican Party ran a woman for vice president.  I feel I now can look any child in the eye and say, “Yep, you can be president.”

I know we have a long way to go to get to full inclusion in the United States.  But today, for a moment, we are closer to the dream that neither Jew or gentile, slave or free, man or woman are divided.  I hope we are more unified than ever before.  Today, I pray for peace and mutual upbuilding.

Connect four: Ellie!

Happy MLK day!  In honor of inauguration week, Ellie will round out the 4×4.

Here are the rules

Connect Four
by Ellie

This summer (May, I believe) during the Presidential Democratic Primaries, Hillary Clinton made a stop in Loretto, Kentucky…home of the famous Maker’s Mark Distillery. Will went to cover this for the AP and because I ::heart:: Hillary (and Hilary), I went along with him to see history. It was a super hot day (sunburn!), but the grounds of the Distillery were packed. I was “with the press”, so we got to jump in the long, long line and get in easily.

I had a great view of her, up on the media bleachers with the other reporters and photographers. The only disadvantage to being able to be on the press bleachers was that I had to act like I was with the press…which means no cheering (no cheering in the pressbox, you homer.). This was really hard for me because I supported her and she was My Candidate.

This is actually the second time I saw Hillary on the campaign trail in person. The first time was when Bill Clinton was running for President (first term) and he, Hillary and Al and Tipper Gore made a stop at the parking lot of a shopping mall in the city in PA that we used to live in (York). Because my mom is a diehard Democrat, we made a family visit there that day (I am not sure if my dad went…he’s a Republican. Suffice to say political discussions have always been lively at the Schmeh house.). I vividly remember them waving to the crowd and clapping along to Bill’s campaign theme song, “Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow” by Fleetwood Mac. I loved that song from then on.
