Courtney’s Animal News
Posted by hilstreet in My animals, news on July 14, 2009
from The Hil Street Journal Strange-News correspondent,
Courtney
From the same citizen reporter who brought Hil Street news like “There’s a ‘roo in my room!,” Courtney reports that last week’s full moon severely affected animal behavior across the globe. Judge for yourself:
July 8 – Turtles crawl on runway, delay flights at JFK
New York City
July 9 – Drunk Badger Disrupts Traffic
Berlin
July 10 – Fugitive Llamas Back on Farm
Louisville, KY – Will, did you cover this too?
Kevin had the best day of my life
My friend Kevin saw Ben Folds at a Nashville coffee shop on Friday.
IN THE FLESH.
I have nothing else to add to this post, because it is already oozing with awesome.
More Scary Robot Stuff …
Dudes. This is serious. From Engadget:
EATR robots are coming, this isn’t funny anymore
Oh sure, we joke about rogue AI all the time, and we’re aware that we’ll probably pollute ourselves to death well before the robots get us, but who really thinks flesh-eating machines are a good idea? Has Morpheus taught us nothing? The (patently evil) scientists behind the EATR project — no fair, they’re making their own jokes now too — say the reconnaissance bot is powered by foraging for and consuming biomatter, which to you and us simply means soft, pulsating, yummy humans. They call it fuel versatility, as gasoline, diesel, and solar power may also be used if available, yet we’ll offer no prizes for predicting which energy source these chainsaw-equipped robots will prefer.

Happy Birthday, Deirdre
I still remember the first time I hung out with Deirdre. We were at a work party and a colleague told me “Hey – you pronounce it ‘Deer-dra’ not ‘Dee-dra’.” After that faux pas, I didn’t know what Deirdre would think of me.
Well, that was four years ago. Since then, we have shared countless pet-sitting duties, Mojo Fish Tacos, work assignments, bottles of wine, religious conversations, tears, and laughs. She has even come to love my husband as her “brain twin.”
I love you, Deirdre. May everyone be as kind-hearted, funny, successful, and cute as you are on their birthday. Happy 30. Welcome to the Jesus Years.

Soul Food
Taste is a sense like no other. It associates us with family, history, joy, tradition, and life. Food is powerful. Hollis will willingly sit in his crate for a couple hours because he knows he will receive a delicious biscuit. My friend from Bangalore, Nandini, tells me you should eat with your hands because taste is such a sensual experience.
Food is religion. Remaining Kosher, refusing meat during Lent, giving up coffee. Denying pork or beef or alcohol. Fasting. When Christ returned to earth, he ate broiled fish further proving he was in the flesh. When Christ taught about love for many and the abundance Christianity can provide, he shared an endless meal. At a wedding celebration, he changed water into wine.
Food is a place. When visiting my colleagues overseas, they wanted to show me their local faire – everything from chili crab to curry to Vegemite – because this is their culture. This is what their mothers fed them and what their mothers fed their mothers.
Food is entertainment. After a marriage celebration, we share a meal and a cake. Food can be so entertaining that we forget it is also the fuel for our lives. Food is a necessity. We need food to live.
Tonight I am going to eat a chicken-fried steak. My dad loved chicken-fried steak, and my mom (sorry Mom), never got the recipe quite right. Wisconsinites are “hot dish” people, not “southern food” people, she will remind me. That’s how I am going to remember my father who left us one year ago today. Through a meal. Through taste. Through food that we need to live.
We love you, Dad.
Visiting with family …
Visited my brother last weekend. My niece thinks Husbanks is the COOLEST. She wanted to be climbing all over him all the time. Pretty funny. Best quotes from my niece:
“Hi. I got a haircut and I am good at ballet.”
“Should I name my barbie Alexa? Or Steven?”
