I was having one of those nights during finals. My shoulders hurt from being slumped over a laptop. I was writing and writing and writing. It was late and cold outside. I was ready for a break.

Husbanks whipped up this beauty for me. If you just thought gin was for the summer – think again! Mix these things together in a fancy glass coffee mug and enjoy with a pretty scarf wrapped around your neck:

Hot Gin Cocktail
2 oz gin
3/4 oz lemon juice
2 oz boiling water
1 tsp sugar
1 cinnamon stick

The Life Cycle of a Female Blogger

Bloggers who blog about day-to-day life start out excited. They write cute posts, elaborate on how wonderful their husbands are, and complain about their lives (in a way that is really bragging). Then, they get punchy. They share their opinions on the world. Next, they realize that opinions are one-dimensional because it’s hard to have a conversation on a computer screen, so they add fluffy posts. Look at my dog! I like chocolate! Over time, they figure out their blogger voice. Then they have children. They stop posting save the additional picture of their baby. Partially because they are busy, but mostly because their life has changed tremendously and they cannot figure out how to put that into words. So it goes – their blog remains forever on a date long past with a picture of a baby who is now in school and could type a blog of their own. On friends’ blogger blog rolls their once-active page is listed at the bottom as “updated 1 years ago.”

I don’t know what 2012 will bring. Will Hil Street continue beyond 2011? Remains to be seen. Seems to me I am following this blog life cycle and going down the path of the blog frozen in time. In the list of blog-cycle activities I have listed, leaving it is next. What I do know is that writing this open diary has been a blessing. It was cathartic for me through lots of life changes – death, birth, illness, career, seminary. And I know it made you laugh – even out loud, I’ve been told. Who knows what is next?

Predictability, Walking, and Husbanks

Riddles started walking at a year. Congrats Riddles!

Husbanks, predictably, has already given him a putter.

While I roll my eyes when I imagine myself saying, “My son had a golf club when he was one,” Husbanks’ love for the game is pretty endearing. And golf is a good hobby to love. He’s not teaching Riddles to steal cars or abuse women or anything.

Why did I go there? Weird jump, Hil.

I am Thankful

I am thankful.

I am thankful that my family has enough healthy food to eat.

I am thankful that we live in a home with air conditioning, heat, and running water.

I am thankful that we can drink our tap water.

I am thankful that we have clothes.

I am thankful that we have cars that work.

I am thankful that we have jobs.

I am thankful to live in a country where my son received advanced medical care. He might not have fought his infection upon birth had his soul been placed in a remote part of Africa. His value is the same as any other human, but he was born here, and that’s why he is healthy today.

I am thankful to live in a place where no one likes the president, no one likes congress, and no one likes Rick Perry, but there isn’t widespread violence.

I’m not anxious about what I don’t have. I am thankful.

Riddles’ First Birthday Party

We had a cute theme …

Cute decorations …

A ton of cupcakes (from scratch, I might add) …

But the Riddles got sick.

Please don’t have people over. I have a fever and a cough and a runny nose.

We canceled the party an hour and a half before the party was to start.

Can I still eat cake even if I have a fever and a cough and a runny nose?

Yes, Riddles. Yes you can.

Even though he was crabby, we still put on his special “1″ shirt and gave him some pumpkin spice cake. We enjoyed a few bites and then opened presents. He celebrated his birthday with his parents and grandparents.

Ah, the party that never was. But you’re only one. You’ll never know.
