We Remember

The US isn’t perfect, but I feel so fortunate to live here. Every time I feel AC or eat ice cream or disagree with someone I know am lucky to be here. I think about it constantly.

I pray for peace, healing, and equality today.

Favorite Quotes from Orientation

I went to day one of orientation today. My mind is swimming. I don’t know any Presbyterian hymns. Help me Lacy.

Funny and interesting quotes from today.

“Think of your theology text as entering into a conversation with someone. They just happen to be dead.”

“You’ll have a lot of books. If you don’t like books why are you here?”

“The hours listed in a pastoral job description refer to pay only.”

I am a student! Weird.

Riddles, don’t drink the trash can apple juice – even if the cool kids do. Let this be a lesson to you.

Back to School

I’m getting anxious about going to school. School? Study? Wha? I haven’t been a student in almost a decade! Let me know if you want to help me make flashcards.

I wore the same outfit on the first day of school every year from 1995 – 2002: red GAP t-shirt and olive green Banana Republic pants. Does that match? That outfit is bananas.

The first email Husbanks ever wrote me was about this very outfit. Let me set the stage.

Summer 2001, Husbanks and I were on the same trip to Austria with our college music group. While in Austria, I had my first experience with H&M. CLEARLY, I ran out of room in my suitcase when packing to return. Husbanks packed the clothes I couldn’t fit in my suitcase and brought them back to the states. And then his mother had them dry cleaned.

We were not dating at the time.

This is sounding stranger and stranger and less and less classy.

A young handsome gentleman comes home with some girl’s clothes in his suitcase after a trip to Europe? And his mother (the girl’s future mother- in-law) discovers them? REALLY, Hil? Use your head.

(Mom, I am NOT a slut.)

The email from Husbanks to me.

August 2001:

Hello to you.  I brought back your pants and I think that I scared your roommate.  I did not know if you wanted to wear them on the first day of classes with your red shirt.  (Does that work, red and olive?  I hope so because that is what the outfit that I picked for tomorrow looks like.  You know, just on the off chance that we run into each other we could at least have something to talk about, being dressed like twins and all.)  Other than that wonder-filled tid bit, I don’t have any thing else to say.  Have fun on the first day of classes and keep me posted about the third of Sept.  Keep a look out for a confused young man in a red shirt and olive pants, you just might know him.

I’ll wear the shirt on my first day of seminary … but I have had this man’s baby so let’s be a little more lenient on the pant issue, OK?

What’s Wrong with This Picture?

We took a trip to northern Arkansas with Husbanks’ sister’s family last week. We enjoyed the scenic Ozark’s lakes and trees.

The resort community’s Methodist church had a cross and flame sculpture that I thought was neat. I snapped a pic.

What’s wrong with this picture?

Let’s hope that’s not the parsonage.

My New Job(s)

The summer is coming to a close and I haven’t told you anything about my new job(s)! This blog has turned into Rid Street and I am sorry about that.

No I’m not, he’s cute!

Well, I’ve got two church jobs. One for my local church and one for the district. Both organize church people doing stuff (good stuff) in the world. My schedules are unpredictable flexible. Definitely not 9-5. I work Sunday mornings and my only night away from Riddles thus far was a night spent at work. But, I also get to spend every afternoon with him snuggling and playing with blocks. I’ll take it. I grew up with parents who worked weekends and holidays. Piece of cake.

I spend the day reading about statistics of those who are hungry, poor, forgotten, and ill. I learn the latest numbers on natural disasters and see where the church can help. I communicate with people across the street and across the globe to see what they need. I meet people who need food, money, community, and direction. Everyday I get a question I have never answered before.

At its worst, I understand the world to be a big puzzle of basic needs that is never solved.

Oh, but at its best, I watch people stretch themselves, and make a difference. I watch the Church, which everyone complains about, as a powerhouse of aid, reaching where no one wants to go. I see people get what they need with gratitude, and immediately give in return. I see people waiting for each other, gaining patience.

When needs and passions meet, that’s the sweet spot. The cycle of injustice never stops, but there are moments where I get a little breath of fresh air. A glimpse. Those are the moments when I remember why I do this.

That’s my jobs!

More Fame

While Husbanks and I don’t share in our friends’ fame, Husbanks does look like famous people. We all remember Brad “Husbanks” Stevens.

And now, because Husbanks is sporting a bushy, bushy beard, it has been commented that he looks like a 1970′s GI-Joe.

Spot on.

Why hasn’t he shaved his beard during the record-breaking drought and heat wave, you ask?

Because he is afraid Riddles won’t recognize him.

You’ve gotten yourself into a hairy situation, haven’t you, Husbanks?
